At the recent Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple unveiled several exciting features coming to iPhones with the iOS 18 update. These new additions are designed to enhance communication, organization, and privacy, making your daily life smoother and more efficient. Here are five standout features based on what we knew about iOS 18 Previously.
1. Schedule Messages in Advance
If you love scheduling emails in Gmail, you’ll be thrilled to know that Apple is introducing a similar feature for iMessage. With this new capability, you can draft messages and set them to send at a specific time, ensuring you never miss a birthday greeting or important reminder. You can also cancel or edit the scheduled message at any time, and a notification will confirm that your message is queued for later delivery. This feature brings a new level of convenience and peace of mind to your messaging routine.
2. Enhanced Call Recording and Transcriptions
Apple is integrating a robust call recording and transcription feature directly into the Phone app, eliminating the need for third-party services. After the update, users can record calls and access transcriptions along with AI-generated summaries of the conversations. This feature, part of Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” suite, will be available in beta this fall for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. To ensure privacy, the person on the other end of the call will receive an automatic notification that the conversation is being recorded.
3. More Expressive Messaging Options
iMessage is getting a significant upgrade with new ways to format and react to texts. Users will soon be able to bold, italicize, underline, and strikethrough their messages, adding more nuance and personality to their communications. Additionally, Apple is expanding the range of emoji reactions, allowing users to respond with any emoji instead of the limited options currently available. The introduction of “Genmoji,” an AI-powered feature, lets users create custom emojis by describing them in the search bar, such as “Labrador with red glasses.”
4. Text Without Cell Service
Building on the Emergency SOS feature, iOS 18 will enable SMS texting via satellite, ensuring you can stay connected even without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. This feature is particularly useful for sending texts or sharing videos with loved ones when you’re off the grid, adding a new layer of reliability to your communication capabilities.
5. Enhanced App Privacy
Protecting your privacy is a top priority in iOS 18. Apple is introducing a feature that allows you to lock specific apps using authentication methods like Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. Once an app is locked, its contents won’t appear in search results, notifications, or Siri suggestions, giving you greater control over who can access sensitive information on your device. This added layer of security is perfect for safeguarding personal apps and data from prying eyes.
Additional Highlights
Beyond these key features, iOS 18 brings several other improvements to enhance your Apple experience. For instance, the new macOS Sequoia update will allow users to mirror and control their iPhone screen directly on a Mac, providing seamless integration between devices. Additionally, Apple is launching a new Passwords app, akin to existing password managers, which will securely store and generate complex passwords across all your Apple devices and even on Windows through iCloud.
These upcoming features in iOS 18 promise to make your iPhone even more indispensable, streamlining tasks and bolstering your digital security.
